  • Birmingham City Council approved incentives up to $185,000 for the new Archbald & Woodrow’s BBQ restaurant that will open Friday, May 2, in the former Rib-It-Up location at 830 First Ave. North. The owner said an $80,000 renovation and hiring 20 workers will bring a dining room with seating for 60, walk-up orders, and a drive-through while generating about $1.5 million in annual sales tax revenue, with a ribbon cutting set for Monday, May 5 at 3 p.m.  AL.com
  • Birmingham Business Alliance announced a series of free events for Small Business Week from May 4 to May 10 to help local small business owners expand their networks. The schedule includes a coffee meet on May 5 at House Eleven, a business session on May 6, a workshop on May 7 and a luncheon on May 8 at The Club — each event offering hands-on advice for growth.  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Today in Birmingham, several suspects pleaded not guilty in court to serious murder charges including capital murder and charges linked to a killing for hire as tight security was in place—prosecutors said the first case will be tried soon.  ABC 33/40
  • Fourteen men, including three tied to a suspected mass killer, are accused in a 59-count federal indictment unsealed yesterday for a drug trafficking operation that ran from January 2021 to March 2025 and involved methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and marijuana—federal agents seized at least nine guns, over $54,000 in cash and more than $100,000 in luxury goods.  6 WBRC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new 13,000-square-foot Education and Visitors Center is under construction next to Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church to honor Civil Rights history and offer space for school tours, meetings and exhibits. The center is backed by local donors such as the Lilly Foundation, Alabama Power Foundation and a $200,000 allocation from Birmingham City Council — and is designed by CCR Architecture & Interiors to support community events and public programming.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Birmingham City Council held a press conference to oppose Senate Bill 330, which passed in Montgomery's upper chamber and is now in the Alabama House — the bill would cut the six Birmingham appointments on the water board and end public input on water issues. Council members said the change would weaken local oversight by limiting elected officials' ability to address water concerns.  WVTM 13
