- ➤ Woodlawn United has led a big turnaround in the neighborhood by fixing homes, opening new businesses, and lowering crime while keeping long-time residents safe— they use grants and community programs to boost affordable housing, schools, and jobs. The nonprofit is now also working with local partners to build a plan that will help both Woodlawn and Kingston stay strong. AL.com

- ➤ A 13-year-old boy was knocked unconscious at City Walk on April 13 when a group of unidentified juveniles attacked him—his mother now demands arrests as police investigate the incident. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Birmingham police made 79 arrests, including 51 for felonies, as part of a week-long crackdown that involved 193 traffic stops & the seizure of 17 firearms, various drugs and $23,209 between April 21 and April 27. ABC 33/40

- ➤ Birmingham students must apply for the Birmingham Promise scholarship before May 1 to help cover tuition and fees at any public college in Alabama—Samantha Williams said the program has received 400—500 applications and urges seniors to complete the Federal Student Aid form to be eligible. - ➤ Jay Raby, a senior health science major who transferred from Birmingham-Southern College after it closed, won the 2025 Mr. Samford Contest with a lip sync and dance performance at a campus event held by Samford. He will walk the stage on Friday, May 2, with fellow graduates wearing a BSC stole to honor his past — his win shows he has found a new home in his college journey. The Birmingham Times
