EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Samford University president Beck Taylor defended the school's DEI work in a speech that rebranded the program as biblical justice and dismissed 1819 News reports as attempts to stir trouble—he vowed that the university will keep its faith-based focus while the board backs his leadership. 1819 News
- ➤ Alabama lawyers will visit classrooms on May 1 and 2 for Law Day 2025 celebrations to explain the Constitution and the work of the legal system. The Alabama Bar Association is coordinating in-person sessions and Zoom visits that run about (45 minutes) (for schools unable to host in person). Yellowhammer News
- ➤ Last week, Alabama Power and Better Basics hosted a storm-safety event at Glen Oaks Intermediate School in Fairfield where Lead Lineman Shane Seeley read the children’s book 'Joe the Lineman' to explain career skills and safety. - ➤ A portion of SSI recipients will get two payments in May, August, October and December when weekends or holidays move the regular check to the previous business day—this double-payment does not add extra money but delivers the next month’s benefit early. Yellowhammer News
- ➤ Today the Legislature passed a bill to set up portable benefit accounts for independent workers such as Uber and DoorDash drivers. Governor Ivey signed the law, which will let businesses voluntarily add funds for health, child care, and retirement benefits starting next year—supporting over 79,000 self-employed individuals. - ➤ Assistant General Counsel Brian Paterson said no evidence showed Birmingham Water Works Board Chair Tereshia Huffman violated the Alabama Ethics Act after a complaint alleging misuse of board funds was reviewed — the claim was found unsubstantiated — and the investigation was closed. New legislation to change the board’s makeup — which is now in the House — may soon bring significant changes to the board. 1819 News

- ➤ After heavy rains caused flooding from Hoover to Birmingham this week, the Red Cross warned that mold can quickly grow in damp homes and stressed that bleach is not enough to clean up water damage—professionals should be called to thoroughly dry affected areas within 12 to 24 hours. The organization also advised homeowners to review their flood insurance options since private policies may not cover large basements if they are not in a flood prone area. 6 WBRC News
