- ➤ The 27th Annual Lebanese Food and Cultural Festival is underway at St. Elias Church on 8th Street South with live music from the Amin Sultan Lebanese band, traditional dances by local youth, and hourly guided tours of the historic church. - ➤ Metal artist Reuben Halpern made an 800-pound, seven-foot-tall Holocaust memorial statue that looks like a dead tree on rusted railroad tracks, and Temple Beth-El members will dedicate it at Elmwood Cemetery on Sunday, April 27 at 9 a.m. in Block 40 (600 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive). AL.com
- ➤ Vulcan Park and Museum hosts the exhibit From Steel to Stage that shows Birmingham’s theater history with artifacts and playbills from old theaters. - ➤ Today, members of the 16th Street Baptist Church broke ground on a new 13,000-square-foot Education and Visitors Center next to the church sanctuary and parsonage to serve as a hub for education, reflection and community engagement. - ➤ The Birmingham Police Department has opened recruitment for its upcoming Police Academy class, which will begin on July 28; interested applicants must first complete a Physical Agility Screening test starting today at Birmingham CrossPlex plus later dates on May 3, May 17, and June 7. - ➤ Gov. Ivey allocated over $237,000 in grants to Birmingham and Jefferson County to cut violent crime, with Birmingham set to use its $100,000 to update police equipment and the county using its $137,242 to buy ballistic tracing tools—after 194 homicides were recorded countywide in 2024. AL.com
