- ➤ Franklyn Isaac Ochoa Corea, age 37, was fatally shot during a reported assault Tuesday night at 5304 Ruby Carson Blvd—he was pronounced dead at 8:48 p.m. and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating his death as a homicide. ABC 33/40

- ➤ Aubrey Bennett, a Carver High School teacher who has taught U.S. government, economics and AP African-American History for 11 years, is named a finalist for Alabama Teacher of the Year. He was honored as BCS’ Secondary Teacher of the Year last year — and if he wins will represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year contest. CBS 42

- ➤ Today, the American Lung Association report gave the Birmingham Metro area an F for air quality because it found high levels of ozone and soot from industry, cars—wildfires, and the report noted that skin color may indicate higher risk of exposure. Barbara Jackson of the Greater-Birmingham Alliance to Stop Pollution said her father’s work exposure has driven her to fight for change since people of color are more than twice as likely to live in polluted air areas. - ➤ During the legislative session, lawmakers have considered two bills that would give the state superintendent the authority to issue subpoenas, summon witnesses—and appoint special investigators, while critics warn that this change could undermine local school board control. Yellowhammer News
- ➤ Dustin Chandler, a well-known parent advocate who helped pass Carly’s Law, urged lawmakers to fix the stalled medical cannabis program so that patients—including his daughter who has seizures—can get the medicine they need after four years of delay. He sent a letter to all 35 state senators while the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission stated that court injunctions have halted its licensing process for 16 months. Yellowhammer News
