CULTURE NEWS

  • Between 1946 and 1998, Vulcan in Birmingham held a traffic beacon instead of his spear as a safety signal for road fatalities. The statue was refurbished in 1999 and its original spear now shines, while the beacon is preserved (displayed at Vulcan Park and Museum).  AL.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices remain high locally while drivers can save at the pump by using loyalty programs and price apps. Retailers like Costco and Walmart offer reduced rates, so smart shopping helps Birmingham drivers ease fuel costs.  WVTM 13

  • Birmingham Fire Department warned many homes lack working smoke detectors following a fatal fire, and residents can now request two free units with installation through a City partnership. Homeowners are advised to test detectors monthly (with battery changes twice a year) for proper fire safety.  The Birmingham Times

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Alabama State Parks added glamping at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, where tents offer beds, linens and climate control. City leaders and park managers dedicated the facility Thursday—glamping will soon be available at six parks to help families enjoy nature with modern comforts.  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local runners from central Alabama are set to run the 130th Boston Marathon today in memory of former colleague Christina Chambers, with some tying her running shoes to theirs (a tribute to her passion for running) to carry her spirit along the course.  6 WBRC News
  • The Birmingham Stallions acquired quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson from the Orlando Storm in a trade — sending quarterback Matt Corral and defensive end Armani Bledsoe to Orlando — and will host the DC Defenders at Protective Stadium Friday, April 24, at 7 p.m.  WVTM 13
