  • Walker County teen Charlie Owens, 14 from Jasper, has published his book titled The Adventures of Charlie: Delighting in Differences to share his kind view during Autism Awareness Month — half the proceeds go to his college fund while the rest are donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital — marking him as the youngest published author with special needs.  CBS 42

CRIME NEWS

  • A California man named Christian Machado, a 22-year-old from Fresno, was arrested Friday for marijuana trafficking at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport after a police investigation by Vice/Narcotics detectives—he is now held at Jefferson County Jail on a $500,000 bond.  ABC 33/40
  • A man was shot on Etowah Street in Tarrant Saturday morning and remains hospitalized in serious condition after being ambushed in an attempted robbery and car theft — a witness said they heard gunfire and called 911 as the suspect fled in his Dodge Hellcat that was recovered two blocks away.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • George McMillan, a former lieutenant governor who nearly beat Wallace — he later started the City Stages music festival that brought new life to downtown Birmingham, died at 81 on Friday. Gov. Kay Ivey said she admired his strong work in public service — and the lasting changes he made in the city.  AL.com
  • Workers put up the welcome sign for Birmingham’s new Coca-Cola Amphitheatre on April 18 as the team works on a $340 million project near the old Carraway Methodist Medical Center site—featuring over 9,000 seats and 24 summer events ahead of the grand opening on June 22.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • George McMillan, a former lieutenant governor and state legislator from Birmingham, died Friday after complications during an attempted back surgery. He had once nearly won a gubernatorial race against George Wallace and founded the City Stages music festival — funeral arrangements will be announced after Easter weekend.  1819 News
  • Legislators in Alabama have seven meeting days left to work on bills that deal with police rules, immigration, tax cuts and internet filters for kids — issues that may affect safety and state budgets — and they plan to end the session by May 19 with a possible earlier finish. The review of these bills comes as the state finalizes the education and fund budgets for the next fiscal year.  AL.com
