COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Loved ones and colleagues honored civil rights attorney J. Mason Davis Jr. during a viewing on Saturday at Boutwell Auditorium, recalling his key legal role during the civil rights movement. Davis will be laid to rest Monday at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery (600 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. S.W.).  WVTM 13
  • Alabama Power linemen Tyrone TJ Morris and Andy Gore now serve as assistant coaches for a 6U baseball team in Clanton. The duo uses their work teamwork and faith to guide practices and games at Clanton City Park (their first coaching role) and help young players grow.  Yellowhammer News
  • A local Navy veteran is biking across America to raise funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation+ which aids first responders and veterans after 9/11. He and a fellow Navy buddy will leave California on July 14, riding to the Pentagon, Shanksville, and the 9/11 Memorial+ to honor their legacy.  WVTM 13

  • Alabama gas prices dropped 10 cents to $3.78 per gallon Saturday, Apr. 18, as repeated closures in the Strait of Hormuz, now under Iranian control, kept supplies uncertain; an economics expert (Dr. Ben Meadows) warns that prices may remain high due to cautious market adjustments.  6 WBRC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ramsay High School honored late senior Laila Hicks—who died in a house fire that claimed her parents—by naming her prom princess during Friday’s ceremony at the Harbert Center, with school officials stating her memory will be celebrated at graduation.  WVTM 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Palmerdale Fire District crews contained a wildfire that burned 15-20 acres on Saturday near Railroad Avenue off Highway 75, and officials said an earlier 77-acre blaze (caused by burning trash) was also contained while urging residents to follow the no-burn order.  ABC 33/40

  • Birmingham fans enjoyed Bessemer native Gucci Mane's halftime performance during the Stallions' home opener at Protective Stadium on Saturday, April 18. The team, now led by Head Coach A.J. McCarron, returned from a season on the road with an energetic celebration.  WVTM 13
