COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Runners took part in Saturday’s Red Shoe Run: Rockin’ 5K to raise money for Ronald McDonald House, which helps families with children in the hospital by easing parents’ stress. Local news figures also joined the event to support the fundraiser.  6 WBRC News
  • Many spring events have taken place this month in Alabama as families enjoyed a BBQ cook-off for breast cancer research, a chocolate festival, an autism walk and NeighborFest on Saturday, April 12. Today at Railroad Park the Spring Festival runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.—and later Birmingham Legion FC will play at Protective Stadium at 4 p.m., with more sports events set later in April.  Yellowhammer News
  • Volunteers in the Smithfield neighborhood helped local seniors on Saturday by pressure washing, painting, and landscaping homes. Council President Darrell O’Quinn and District Five partnered with House Proud to support repairs that help seniors stay in their homes.  6 WBRC News
  • Philadelphia Eagles cornerback James Bradberry hosted a fundraising event Saturday at The Club in Birmingham to support AG Gaston Boys and Girls Club + the Pleasant Grove High School graduate said he felt called to give back to his community + he credited the support he received growing up for his success.  6 WBRC News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A two-vehicle crash closed all northbound lanes of Interstate 65 in Blount County near Smoke Rise at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, April 12, and troopers said the lanes will remain blocked for an undetermined time.  WVTM 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents met at the Homewood Senior Center in late March to oppose Samford's Creekside development, which includes a planned 10-story hotel and may harm the habitat for the spotted salamander by encroaching on vital vernal pools—fueling fears that the salamander migration on South Lakeshore Drive could be disrupted. Retired biology professor Ellen McLaughlin and other local stakeholders argued the project risks an environmental tradition that has defined Homewood for generations—prompting calls for better protection of this unique native species.  WBHM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Tuberville and Rep. Rogers introduced a bill on Tuesday in the House that would add about 50,000 acres to Talladega National Forest by including Clay, Coosa and Talladega counties—this act also gives the U.S. Forest Service the power to buy land from willing sellers. The bill would further expand protections on the Pinhoti Trail and has received support from local county commissions and the Alabama Trails Foundation—efforts seen as a move to boost outdoor recreation and tourism.  WVTM 13
