  • Birmingham hosts several spring festivals this weekend with today’s NeighborFest at Linn Park from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., sponsored by Regions Bank, PNC + Birmingham Realtist Association and offering live DJ, food vendors and a kids zone. On Sunday, the City of Birmingham Spring Festival at Railroad Park from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and the Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival at Arthur Shores Park from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. will feature food trucks, face painting and live jazz while First Avenue South will be closed from 11:00 p.m. today through Sunday evening.  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office raided the 1700 block of 32nd Place North in Birmingham on Wednesday and arrested nine people while seizing fentanyl, meth, cocaine, marijuana, $8,621 in cash, and six guns—measures taken to keep the streets safe.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former UAB summer camper Anushka Patel will walk the commencement stage on May 2 to earn her Master of Business Administration and the following morning receive her bachelor’s degree in neuroscience with honors. A Vestavia Hills native who has been a mentor and ambassador through UAB’s CORD camps, Patel will now join the UAB Heersink School of Medicine to pursue a career in medicine — completing a full-circle moment at the university.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Birmingham Water Works Board approved new rules on Wednesday that cut public comment time from three minutes to two minutes and require a written request within 24 hours—critics including mayor Gary Richardson called the move cowardly and said it limits customer input.  AL.com
  • On Thursday the Senate passed a nearly $10 billion Education Trust Fund budget and supplemental appropriations that bring education spending to over $12 billion for fiscal year 2026—changes include a new K-12 funding model and no teacher pay raise due to absorbed costs from health insurance and retirement plans. The bill now heads to the House for consideration.  1819 News
