  • Construction workers are changing the old Golden Flake factory west of I-65 into a mixed-use center called The Factory at Golden Flake so Southeastern Salvage can move in. The center will open on Sunday, June 1 and offer over 135,000 sqft of indoor space and extra outdoor area for other tenants—a boost to local growth.  Bham Now
  • Zack Kass, advisor and former Head of Go-To-Market at OpenAI, was named a keynote speaker for Sloss Tech 2025 in downtown Birmingham from June 25-27.   • Former State Rep John Rogers, 84, was released early from prison—now under home confinement in Birmingham after his attorney requested the change due to his recent heart surgery and health issues tied to a federal fraud case.  Yellowhammer News
  • Birmingham police responded on Thursday to a shooting call at an apartment on the 2100 block of 29th Avenue North—where a man in his mid-20s was found dead from a gunshot wound after a family member forced entry to check on him—and they are investigating whether he was the intended target or an innocent bystander.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yoshiyuki Hara, Ph.D., an assistant professor at UAB, was honored with the Hamako Ito Chaplin Memorial Award for Excellence in Japanese Language Teaching from the Association for Asian Studies—he earned a $1,000 prize for his creative teaching methods and work promoting Japanese in the South.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the city spent more than $141 million in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act on transportation, housing, and violence prevention projects. City officials reported that the funding supports 196 local projects—including $3 million allocated for each council district—and must be fully spent by Dec. 31, 2026.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alabama lawmakers passed a bill that expands Medicaid access for low-income pregnant women so they can get care in their first trimester. The legislation is now on Gov. Kay Ivey’s desk and doctors say it could lower the state's high maternal death rate.  6 WBRC News
  • The Jefferson County Department of Health will host three free+confidential STI testing events in Birmingham next week: April 14 at Western Health Center in Midfield from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 16 at Central Health Center in Downtown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and April 18 at Eastern Health Center in Roebuck from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The events will test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis and trichomoniasis and do not require an appointment.  Bham Now
