BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lucky Stranger, a new bar replacing the popular Parkside on Fifth, will open soon at 4036 5th Ave in Avondale & promises a laid-back spot with canned beer, drafts and simple cocktails in a historic 1895 building.  AL.com
  • Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will have Breeze Airways begin nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale and Raleigh-Durham starting July 3, while adding daily flights to Denver, Orlando, and Nashville. Restroom upgrades in concourse C will start in May as the airport also hosts its 95th anniversary exhibit celebrating the country’s 250th birthday.  Bham Now
  • Atlanta-based Collected Vintage is set to open its first Alabama storefront in downtown after hosting a Vintage and Coffee pop-up series at local cafes. The new store will be at 312 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. North (Unit 4) with grand opening details to be announced soon.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Birmingham-born tenor Elias Hendricks will present his one night only show Classical Soul by Candlelight at the Harambe Room on April 25. Doors open at 7 p.m. for a candlelit event that blends opera with soul music and includes live piano, cello, and a charcuterie spread with free-flowing drinks.  The Birmingham Times
  • Alabama Symphony Orchestra will perform live Star Wars music today at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex led by Principal Pops Conductor Chris Confessore.   • The Alabama State Board of Education said it will overhaul teacher certification guidelines to simplify and clarify pathways for teachers. The board will vote on the new system after a 35-day public comment period (including a two hundred dollar lifetime certificate for veteran educators).  AL.com
  • UAB earned top rankings in 17 healthcare programs as reported by U.S. News & World Report, including the nation’s top degree in healthcare management and several top-10 nursing specialties. The achievement underscores its focus on academic quality and innovation.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Birmingham Housing Authority partnered with Occupi to offer over 10,000 residents new digital rent payment options. Rollout begins this month — including prepaid cards, cash equivalents, and digital wallets — with free onboarding and instant account confirmation available.  ABC 33/40
  • Central Alabama Water will process severance payments electronically tonight for about two dozen laid-off employees after weeks without funds, officials said. The layoffs are part of a corporate reorganization that cut (135) positions and reduced the overall workforce.  AL.com
  • Central Alabama Water has outsourced water testing to Pace Analytical Services following cutbacks that left its EnviroLab unable to meet state and federal standards — the utility is also exploring a lease for a lab building to generate revenue and support compliance.  WBHM

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Alabama at Birmingham professor Edwyn Boyd says spring allergies may disrupt sleep by causing inflammation from airborne allergens (pollen, mold, and dust mite proteins). Residents are advised to use air purifiers, keep windows closed at night, and shower before bed to ease symptoms.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Bissell has recalled 1.7 million steam cleaners (Steam Shot OmniReach and Omni Steam models) sold at Target and other retailers after attachments detached and ejected hot water, causing burns on 161 users.   • The Cathedral Church of the Advent is considering buying the Birmingham Board of Education building across from Linn Park for $5.5 million. The church has a six-month due diligence period while the Board plans to move to a new location this fall.  AL.com
