  • A Birmingham woman spent 71 days trying to rescue a stray dog near a Walmart parking lot in early January. Her social media posts recorded the effort—leading to a successful capture at the vet and a new home for the dog as she ponders adoption.  6 WBRC News
  • On Apr. 2, Birmingham’s Community Development Director, Meghan Venable-Thomas, unveiled the Home for All micro-shelter village at Faith Chapel Care Center, marking a new approach that goes beyond housing by fostering stability and dignity for residents.  The Birmingham Times

  • Magic City Art Connection returns for its 43rd year at Sloss Furnaces from Friday, April 24 to Sunday, April 26, showcasing 175 juried artists, live performances, workshops and the Corks & Chefs tasting event.   • The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute unveiled KultureCity’s 1,000th sensory room today to provide a calm space for visitors with sensory needs (including autism and other sensitivities) as part of its plan to become a KultureCity Sensory Inclusive certified location.  Bham Now
  • Giuseppe’s Cafe in Glen Iris has been named Alabama’s best hole-in-the-wall by Mashed. The longtime pizzeria (founded by Seattle native Joe Williams in 2002 at 925 8th St S) remains a neighborhood staple known for its old-style Italian dishes.  Bham Now

  • United Way of Central Alabama’s EXCEL program has invested $1.2M to expand 51 early learning programs in Birmingham, providing up to $25,000 per childcare provider plus creating 140 jobs and increasing access for 2,000 local children.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beau's Law—the state law to protect outdoor dogs—passed the legislature late Wednesday and now heads to the governor's desk. The bill sets new misdemeanor charges for repeat tethering violations and will take effect Oct. 1.  WVTM 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB researchers in Birmingham revealed that tau proteins spread through connected neurons & may help guide therapies to slow Alzheimer’s memory loss. The study used fMRI data and brain samples to link unique brain wiring to disease progression.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • The Lakeshore Foundation will host the U.S. Wheelchair Rugby Association National Championship today at its Homewood campus until Sunday, April 12 - eighteen teams will compete across three divisions for national titles with free admission and parking provided.  Bham Now
  • Alabama-based Noah Basketball offers a shot-tracking system used by 28 NBA teams and over 200 NCAA teams; Jonathan Carter of Shoot 360 in Birmingham and Huntsville uses a sensor above the goal to help players perfect their shots—bringing pro-level training to local gyms.  WVTM 13
