- ➤ Joseph Holt started the Holt Foundation in 2024 to teach trade skills to young adults so they can learn carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. He is running for Birmingham’s District 4 seat on city council to grow his program — which has helped 25 local youths get jobs, internships and scholarships. AL.com

- ➤ Truckworx announced plans to build a new 12,000-square-foot headquarters at 2224 24th Ave. N in Birmingham with a $6.8 million investment that will create 52 high-paying jobs. The project, supported by local officials and partners (with roles in accounting, IT, HR, support services, and leadership paying about $67,000 on average), is expected to centralize the company’s operations currently split between Birmingham and Homewood. - ➤ Bruto opened on 4th Ave S in Avondale on March 25; the café run by the team behind Mom’s Basement offers in-house baked breads plus a mix of European and Southern dishes and displays art curated by co-owner Wes Frazer. - ➤ The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved tuition increases for the 2025-2026 academic year during an April meeting following a Finance Committee recommendation—residential undergraduate rates will rise by about 2.7% to 3.0%, and similar increases will affect non-resident and UAB professional programs. - ➤ Birmingham city councilors approved a plan to install TRAINFO sensors on select poles along train tracks that will alert residents when a train approaches — the new system, funded by American Rescue Plan Act dollars, will cover District 7 communities such as East Brownville, West Brownville, Green Acres, Hillman, Oxmoor Valley and Powderly. The dynamic messaging signage will help drivers and first responders avoid delays and accidents. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Today, the Birmingham Retirement and Relief Pension System board will vote on a plan called Retiree Financial Relief that may be the first pension increase in 25 years for about 3,000 to 4,000 retired city workers who get roughly $300 to $400 a month. The vote at 3 p.m. (in the mayor's conference room D at Birmingham City Hall) will send the plan to the city council if approved. 6 WBRC News
- ➤ Lawmakers and political groups are debating a lottery-only gambling plan before the 2026 elections — some conservatives claim that a lottery means legalizing full casino gambling while supporters argue it could raise up to $438 million a year to fund roads, schools, and healthcare.
