  • Heavenly Donut Co. is set to open its second location in Homewood on April 17. The popular shop will debut a collaborative café space with Baba Java Coffee at The Edge while continuing its menu of cake doughnuts, kolaches, and more.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In March, Sen. Tommy Tuberville received a $30,000 donation from VGW Luckyland Inc., an online gambling company aiming to shape Alabama’s gambling laws, as part of his fundraising for governor. His campaign has raised over $581,000 so far.  AL.com
  • USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins has designated 30 counties in Alabama as primary disaster areas due to severe drought—an announcement from Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate—making farm operators eligible for emergency loans if they apply within eight months.  ABC 33/40
  • Palmerdale Fire District joined the state retirement system to secure benefits for its 27 firefighters and service employees (located 15 miles northeast of Birmingham) and to boost recruitment and retention after years of effort.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB Trauma will host its third annual Heroes and Healers event on Friday, May 1 at the UAB Alys Stephens Center. The event honors trauma survivors, care teams and first responders with three short films and raises funds for the UAB Trauma Survivors Network.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Last week, 214 homes sold in Jefferson County at an average of $446K, including a 1928 mansion at 2 Rockledge Road in Mountain Brook that sold for $4.51M. The property was listed by RealtySouth (noted for its gardens and indoor-outdoor living) and helped snap the winter slowdown.  Bham Now
  • According to Niche's 12th annual rankings released in late March, eight of Alabama’s top ten best places to live are in the Birmingham metro, with Meadowbrook topping the list and cities like Madison, Auburn, Hoover, and Homewood succeeding — additional Birmingham communities rank between 11 and 20.  Bham Now

  • Birmingham sports fans enjoyed the Barons' opening day on Tuesday at home while the Bulls will play a playoff game on Thursday at Pelham Civic Center. Legion FC returns Sunday to Protective Stadium for a home match and the Stallions will have their UFL opener next Saturday.  Bham Now
