COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since October, cousins Kenneth 'Niddy' Hubbard, Reginald Johnson and George Johnson have combined their skills to offer free haircuts, meals and clothing every Sunday from noon to 4 at NLess Cutz (809 3rd Ave N) in Birmingham. They started with a small grill and a few dollars and have grown the service to help dozens of homeless and underserved residents.  The Birmingham Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On April 6, Birmingham authorities reported that two separate traffic crashes killed five people—including a 6-year-old boy—in a two-vehicle head-on collision on Arkadelphia Road around 4:53 p.m.—where three lives were lost and two persons were injured—and in a single-vehicle crash on Bessemer Road around 8 p.m. that claimed two lives.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham Police said that from January to March they closed 17 out of 21 murder investigations, reaching a record 81% clearance rate—fewer homicides occurred than last year. Officers said strong police work and community help improved the results.  6 WBRC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 5, the Millennium Tour 2025 brought a high-energy music show to the Legacy Arena at the BJCC—fans enjoyed live hits by top artists such as Trey Songz and Boosie BadAzz. The Black Promoters Collective produced the event—uniting R&B and hip-hop in a celebration that energized Birmingham.  The Birmingham Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kay Ivey urged Alabamians to support Team Alabama as Birmingham prepares to host the 2025 World Police + Fire Games this summer from June 27 to July 6. More than 8,500 first responders from over 70 countries will compete in over 70 sports events at local venues, a move that is expected to boost tourism.  Yellowhammer News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Crisis Center Inc. in Birmingham received over $53,000 in state dollars to support forensic evidence collection and legal advocacy for sexual and domestic abuse victims. Executive Director Ana Sullivan said the funds will allow the center to hire additional SANE nurses—ensuring vital 24/7 care for the community.  6 WBRC News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last month, Legacy Arena hosted the NCAA Women's Basketball Regional that brought in over $12 million from 45,000 tickets sold + downtown hotels and restaurants thrived during the event. South Carolina women's coach Dawn Staley praised Birmingham for making her team feel special, and a men's NCAA Tournament is scheduled for 2028.  WVTM 13
