  • J. Mason Davis, a Birmingham-born civil rights leader & community pioneer, died at age 90. He challenged segregation early in his career, taught law, and was honored by United Way with a leadership society bearing his name.  Bham Now
  • The Pizitz Food Hall in downtown is competing in USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice poll, with locals able to vote once per day until Monday, Apr. 13 at 11 a.m., and winners set to be announced on Wednesday, Apr. 22.  Bham Now
  • Birmingham native Kimberly Robinson, CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, witnessed Artemis II lift off on April 1 as she celebrated her 31-year career at NASA. Her work managing key missions and launching new rockets helped push the path to a long-term presence on the moon.  Bham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comedian Bert Kreischer will perform at the Coca-Cola Amphitheater in Birmingham on Sept. 11, 2026 as part of his newly extended Permission To Party World Tour; presale tickets go live on April 8 at 10 a.m. and general sales begin on April 10.  ABC 33/40

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Birmingham climbed nearly 23 cents over the past week to an average of $3.76 per gallon, based on a survey of 550 stations. The increase marked a 78.5-cent rise from a month ago, with local prices ranging from $3.54 to $4.09.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders in Irondale are conducting an $85,000 feasibility study to explore creating an independent school system that may increase taxes. They expect results in three to four months, which will inform if residents support the change.  ABC 33/40

HEALTH NEWS

  • In March, 61 local restaurants earned A+ food service scores after routine Health Department inspections (including Yo Mama’s, Toasted Yolk and Otey’s) to verify safe practices.  Bham Now
  • A UAB team’s automated AMPLIFY Diet program helped older cancer survivors lose significant weight and improve health through online sessions and feedback. A six‐month trial showed nearly five times the weight loss of usual care + improved diet quality, and researchers plan to expand the program to more survivors.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • The UAB School of Public Health was named a national Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health due to new HRSA funding. The center, led by faculty experts (including Professors Julie Preskitt and Martha Wingate), will boost training and research to improve care for mothers, children and youth with special needs.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • ABC 33/40's I-Team tested tap water in Hoover, Center Point, and downtown Birmingham using fluoride kits and found readings that varied from low to mixed (some near the no-fluoride range). Central Alabama Water is facing pending litigation that could affect when full fluoridation is restored.  ABC 33/40
