  • Birmingham was ranked sixth on Livability.com's list of best places to live among over 2,300 U.S. cities, highlighting its affordable housing, quality amenities, and small-town feel + urban perks. It is one of only two Alabama cities to make the top 10.  6 WBRC News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Satterfield’s Restaurant, a beloved fine dining spot known for Becky’s Beignets (warm cinnamon apples and vanilla ice cream), will close on April 18th after 21 years in Vestavia Hills. Locals have shared memories online as it prepares for its final days.  Bham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Birmingham is buzzing with live music this April at local venues such as Saturn, Coca-Cola Amphitheater, and Elysian Gardens. Concerts spanning rock, indie, jazz and country begin today and continue through April 27 (dates vary) with free and affordable tickets available.  Bham Now
  • On Wednesday night, Deante Kyle held a sold-out live event for his Grits and Eggs Podcast at Hoover’s Stardome. He urged locals to engage in honest conversation, focus on community involvement, and take small steps toward personal growth.  The Birmingham Times
  • Last month, the Alabama State Council on the Arts awarded $2.7M in grants to 60 local arts centers, including Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema, which received $85,000 to expand with 2 micro cinemas + additional classroom space and new signage.  Bham Now
  • The Grand Bohemian in Mountain Brook is hosting spring rooftop events at Habitat Feed and Social, featuring a Master's Week event with themed cocktails and mini putt-putt (April 9 to 12), a monthly spirit tasting starting April 16, and a Derby Day watch party on May 2.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Birmingham students from South Hampton K-8, the only Alabama school in the finals, are competing in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Innovators Competition by presenting a solar-powered storm alert system. They will pitch in Washington and the public can vote to add a $10,000 bonus through April 8.  6 WBRC News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bill Ireland Sr.’s legacy lives on in Springville where conservationists preserved Big Canoe Creek Nature Preserve—an effort that helped pass Alabama’s Forever Wild program. His work inspires ongoing initiatives to protect outdoor recreation areas for local families.  Bham Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Children’s of Alabama’s Benjamin Russell Hospital expanded its PICU with 50 new beds built by Hoar Construction in February. The unit, combining intensive and special care to treat patients with needs, more than doubled the 24-bed plan (donations spurred the boost) and stayed open during the build (ensuring care continued).  Bham Now
  • A new UAB study published in Nature Communications shows how tiny cone cells in the eye send special signals to the brain — letting people see fine details. The findings underline why proper vision correction matters and may influence future eye care.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • Birmingham will host the FISE World Series at City Walk from August 6-9 where thousands will compete in BMX, skateboarding and 3-on-3 basketball events.
