- ➤ Community Food Bank of Central Alabama broke ground on a new facility on Turin Drive in Bessemer yesterday— the new building will serve more neighbors facing food insecurity by next spring as it supports 12 counties and reaches over 200 community partners. CEO Nicole Williams encouraged local donors and volunteers to help with the 53-week build. WVTM 13
- ➤ Birmingham’s weekend events begin today with the Birmingham Barons starting their season at Regions Field at 7:00 p.m. and continue through April 6 with activities including an arcade bar opening—featuring 60 arcade games—a plant sale, film screenings and family runs. Bham Now

- ➤ A 17-year-old boy was arrested by Birmingham police on March 27 in the 7700 block of 1st Avenue North for illegal possession of a Glock handgun and a Glock Switch—an item made illegal by a bill signed in March by Governor Kay Ivey. 6 WBRC News
- ➤ Two men were shot following an argument at Taco Bell on the 2300 block of Bessemer Road on April 3—both remain in stable condition while police have not taken any suspect into custody. CBS 42
- ➤ Police said a man was fatally shot in an abandoned west Birmingham home around 10:40 a.m. on Wednesday after a fight turned violent and officers later identified (42-year-old Brandon Luvine Cunningham) as the victim. CBS 42

- ➤ Jose Medina Camacho, co-owner of downtown Birmingham cocktail bar Adios, has been named a James Beard Award finalist for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service. He is one of five finalists nationally and the only one from the Southeast, with winners to be announced on June 16 in Chicago. CBS 42

- ➤ Birmingham Water Works is spending $7 million to upgrade its old computer system that tracks water meters, billing and maintenance before it fails in 2027—this new cloud-based system will take 12 to 15 months and set the stage for automated meter reading with 220,000 new meters planned. AL.com
- ➤ Birmingham lawmakers found that key programs such as Magic City Classic, Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and Birmingham Civil Rights Museum were left unfunded in the proposed fiscal year 2026 General Fund budget, and the House General Fund chairman said funding will be restored when the budget reaches the Senate. Sen. Rodger Smitherman continues to press for proper support and vowed to address the issue until it is corrected. ABC 33/40
