COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Urban Alchemy’s HEART team — three months in — has helped 219 unhoused residents in Birmingham access food, housing, and medical care, which included 50 housing referrals and nearly 200 service interactions in February. Former homeless Calvin Williams now drives the team and uses his own past to build trust and guide residents to the support they need.  6 WBRC News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At approximately 1:15 a.m. on April 2, a fiery two-vehicle crash on Highway 79 in Jefferson County closed the road when a passenger truck and a regional delivery tractor trailer caught fire—emergency crews treated two people and one was critically injured and taken to UAB Trauma Center as ALDOT and the Sheriff's Office managed the scene.  ABC 33/40

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Birmingham’s new Up-Down Arcade Bar will open tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Urban Supply in Parkside—featuring over 60 classic arcade games and a wide selection of craft beers. The first 100 guests will receive 20 free game tokens to play most games that cost one token each—promising an exciting start for local gamers.  Bham Now
  • The Poarch Creek Indians have bought the Birmingham Racecourse through Wind Creek Hospitality and plan to transform it into a top entertainment destination that will boost the local economy. They will expand the venue to include parimutuel and historical horse racing games — creating jobs and attracting tourists.  ABC 33/40

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was fatally shot in an abandoned house in west Birmingham on Wednesday morning—police said they responded at 10:45 a.m. and detained two individuals linked by community tips to a struggle and possible criminal activity inside the house.  CBS 42

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jefferson County Superintendent Walter B. Gonsoulin Jr. was named national superintendent of the year by the AASA and said his students are his biggest inspiration — he has led the district since 2017, serving over 30,000 students in more than 50 schools — and he continues to add programs that help students start work right after high school.  WVTM 13
  • Seniors in Birmingham City Schools must submit the Birmingham Promise scholarship and FAFSA applications by May 1 to secure tuition help for public colleges and two-year programs (the scholarship covers tuition and fees not met by other aid) and are urged to gather financial records early (like tax returns and bank statements) to meet the deadline.  The Birmingham Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mountain Brook Mayor Stewart Welch announced this morning that he will not seek re-election after serving since 2016 — he said the city is thriving with safe neighborhoods, improved public spaces, and solid infrastructure, and he plans to finish his term in the coming months.  Yellowhammer News
  • Governor Kay Ivey signed the Paid Parental Leave Act on Wednesday, giving state employees and teachers paid time off after a birth, stillbirth, or miscarriage - female workers get eight weeks and male workers get two weeks. Adoptive parents of children three or younger can choose benefits - one parent may take eight weeks and the other two weeks, with the law taking effect July 1.  6 WBRC News
