- ➤ On April 1, community partners, muralists, and donors helped paint a nearly finished 16,036 (sqft) mural on the side of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama's new distribution facility along Lakeshore Parkway in Bessemer. The center will open in June. Bham Now
- ➤ On April 1, 2026, the city and Faith Chapel Care Center opened the 15-unit Home For All Micro-Shelter Village near downtown to offer homeless men up to one year of furnished shelter with wrap-around support services including workforce development and case management. Michael Tolliver, one of the first residents, said the program gives him a vital chance to rebuild his life. AL.com

- ➤ Jefferson County leaders host a job fair today at Boutwell Auditorium in downtown Birmingham from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to connect workers with new job opportunities after about 500 layoffs; free boxed lunches are provided for the first 200 attendees. ABC 33/40
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ New Census estimates show North Alabama is outpacing other areas in 2025, with Limestone County growing 3.3% (adding 3,877 residents) and Madison County following while Birmingham sees just 0.3% growth and Huntsville metro gains about 14,000 residents. Yellowhammer News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UAB professors including Sadanandan Velu are researching a treatment that blocks a specific sodium channel in metastatic thyroid cancer cells. The study, still in its basic science stage, could offer a new option for patients with a difficult-to-treat form of cancer. University of Alabama at Birmingham
- ➤ UAB expert Marissa Locy (optometrist) explains that watery eyes this season may signal allergy symptoms while chronic dry eye remains a separate condition. - ➤ Birmingham will host the Festival International des Sports Extrêmes global tour on Aug. 7 to 9 at City Walk BHAM, making it the only U.S. city on the schedule. More than 400 athletes will compete in BMX, skateboarding and 3x3 basketball (expected to draw over 20,000 spectators). Bham Now
