COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Birmingham nonprofit Daniel Payne Legacy Village Foundation will launch its Daniel’s Meal Subscription Service to help low to moderate-income families by selecting 100 winners to receive 32 to 36 free meals weekly after paying a $50 fee at Daniel Payne Village Plaza. The lottery is open online today & a launch event will take place on April 5 as the program is funded by a $255,000 city grant to combat food insecurity.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A Birmingham man (23-year-old Griffin Nelson Race) was arrested on Monday after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a January 4 report of inappropriate contact with a minor and received additional allegations of misconduct, and he now faces charges including electronic solicitation of a child, contributing to the delinquency of a child, distributing pornography to minors, and traveling for an unlawful sexual act while being held at the Shelby County Jail.  CBS 42
  • A 21-year-old woman, Montrease Yvonne Booker, was fatally shot in the 1300 block of 7th Place in Pleasant Grove just before 5:30 a.m. on March 31—she died at the scene and Pleasant Grove Police are investigating.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three attorneys appealed sanctions set by Judge Liles Burke in a lawsuit over the state's Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act. They refiled the case in another court to avoid their assigned judge — a move the judge said undermines a fair legal process.  1819 News
  • Mayor Randall L. Woodfin appointed Interim Police Chief Michael Pickett as the new chief of the Birmingham Police Department effective immediately, and Pickett, a 20-year veteran who served as interim chief since Chief Scott Thurmond's retirement on November 29, is set to tackle the department's staffing shortage & low morale. This appointment comes as the city works to strengthen its police force and improve public trust.  1819 News
