  • The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is growing community ties by offering LEAP sports programs + mentorship, Autism Awareness decals, Coffee with a Cop events and a 'To Be Human' video series that highlights deputies. CULTURE NEWS

  • On Thursday, April 2, 2026, the city will hold a free outdoor screening of “The Magic City: Birmingham According to Sun Ra” at the Sloss Furnaces campus under the water tower (doors open at 7:00 p.m., film begins at 8:00 p.m.) as part of the Year of Birmingham Jazz initiative.  The Birmingham Times
  • Bottega — a Birmingham favorite — becomes a finalist for a James Beard Award in the Outstanding Hospitality category as co-owner Pardis Stitt and her team enhance guest experiences in its 1925 Beaux-Arts building. Winners will be announced Monday, June 15 in Chicago.  Bham Now

  • Gas prices have risen above $4 per gallon, including across Birmingham, as global supply disruptions push up fuel costs; economists warn that consumers may feel the pinch and that efforts to release emergency reserves could ease prices soon.  6 WBRC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAB’s Nurse-Midwifery Pathway received five-year accreditation (valid through 2030) from the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, boosting its efforts to expand high-quality women’s and infant care in Birmingham. The program, the only one of its kind in Alabama, will work with community partners to improve maternal health outcomes.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

HEALTH NEWS

  • In March, 18 food establishments in Jefferson County received health scores of 84 or below after inspectors found mold, pests, and unsafe food temperatures — each business must be reinspected within 60 days to address these issues.  AL.com
