ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Jefferson County deputies and Gardendale Fire and Rescue responded at 6:10 p.m. Saturday to the 100 block of Neely Road after 45-year-old Pablo Nunez was struck by a falling tree while cutting it down at his home, and he was pronounced dead at 6:28 p.m.  AL.com
  • Birmingham woman Michelle Lynn Dickerson, 34, was struck by a vehicle at 9:29 p.m. Friday along 36th Street at Avenue E in Fairfield—she was taken to UAB Hospital and pronounced dead at 3:06 p.m. Saturday as the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crash.  AL.com
  • A Birmingham woman, Michella Lynn Dickerson, 34, was struck and killed by a vehicle in Fairfield on March 28 while walking on 36th Street at Avenue E and was taken to UAB Hospital where she died the next day—Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking into the incident.  CBS 42

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police made 75 arrests from March 23 to March 30 as part of their crime reduction strategy—51 were felony arrests and 24 were misdemeanor arrests—and they also conducted 281 traffic stops, issued 200 citations, seized 13 firearms and recovered multiple drugs.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham police charged 22-year-old Damien McDaniel in eight cases alleging 14 homicides (including the fatal shooting of a firefighter at Fire Station 9) as investigators continue to gather evidence for trial.  ABC 33/40
  • A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on 36th Street at Avenue E in Fairfield on March 28 at 9:30 p.m.—the victim, Michella Lynn Dickerson from Birmingham, died at UAB Hospital on March 29 while the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department investigates the incident.  6 WBRC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Birmingham City Schools, Jones Valley Teaching Farm & New York nonprofit New York Sun Works have set up hydroponic labs in eight schools to give students a new way to learn science when classes resume today. The labs use a water recirculation system that saves 90% water and are funded by a $500,000 seed commitment from the city and school system.  The Birmingham Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • AL.com tracked recyclables from Hoover, Homewood, Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook and found that most mixed waste ended at Big Sky Environmental in Adamsville when the RePower South facility was not fully open. City officials and waste managers say the recyclables are still processed properly—though they continue to monitor the service for any problems.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Senator Greg Albritton introduced a bill this session that would legalize Class II casinos, sports betting and a statewide lottery while establishing a Gaming Commission — he also proposed a September special election to let voters decide before next year's elections.  Yellowhammer News
