COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Major John (Alex) Klinner, of the 99th Refueling Squadron who died during a refueling mission in Iraq, is being honored today at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Trussville with flags at half-staff as the community gathers to remember his sacrifice.  WVTM 13
  • The annual Spring Festival presented by Window World was held on Sunday at Railroad Park, where families enjoyed an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt, DJ music, food trucks, and face painting. Mayor Randall Woodfin and community partners joined entertainers from UniverSoul Circus for a festive celebration.  The Birmingham Times
  • UAB’s annual 48-hour Giving Days fundraiser is scheduled for April 2-3 to support essential programs—from emergency funds to specialized clinics (showing Blazer pride) as alumni, students, staff, and families come together to make a local impact.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • A new neighborhood coffee shop, Remnant Coffee, opened March 21 at 8149 Parkway Drive in Leeds — a spot offering homemade syrups and local roasts to help build community. Owner Jordan Parkman said the venue is designed for both working and socializing.  6 WBRC News
  • Desi Twist, a Bollywood-themed restaurant, is now open in The Villages at Brock’s Gap in Hoover. Founder Ali Mathani said the restaurant offers Indian fusion bowls and handheld dishes (inspired by his moms' recipes) that blend traditional flavors with American-style twists.  Bham Now

  • Birmingham will host 56 local events in April, featuring festivals, concerts, theater, and food fairs at venues like the Birmingham Museum of Art and Sloss Furnaces. Residents can check details for dates and times to join community celebrations and enjoy the spring season.  Bham Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After six years of litigation, a Walker County jury awarded boat repairman Mark Griffin $70M for injuries caused by a 2019 wastewater spill from the Tyson Farms facility near Hanceville which exposed him to dangerous bacteria.  6 WBRC News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Jefferson County judge ordered Central Alabama Water to resume fluoride on Monday at 2:30 p.m. after the city of Birmingham claimed the utility broke state law by stopping fluoridation without 90 days’ notice — the order remains until 5 p.m. April 2 for a hearing.  WVTM 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • More young adults are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer at UAB’s O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, prompting a change in screening guidelines. Dr. Robert Hollis (lead physician) said tests now start at 45 to detect cancer early and encourage healthier habits.  6 WBRC News
  • A new UAB study found that adding therapy to clear endotoxins from the blood increases survival at 1 and 3 months + the treatment is not yet approved in the US + findings offer promise for critically ill patients.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson attended a private workout with the New York Jets this weekend as draft speculation heats up. Scouts praised his pro day at Tuscaloosa, and he is seen as a strong candidate to be picked early when the draft begins on April 23 (teams even might trade to secure him).  Yellowhammer News
