CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police said they found a man with life-threatening injuries from a shooting near 28th Street South and 7th Avenue South just before 2 a.m. on March 30 after an argument over a car crash — no one is in custody.  WVTM 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • A guide to independent bookstores in Alabama tells locals where to buy books and join in-store events. It lists shops in Huntsville, Birmingham, Albertville, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Dothan and Fairhope—each known for unique events and personal service.  Yellowhammer News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex generated $349.8 million in economic impact in 2024, with an increase of $32.9 million from 2023 and support for nearly 2,400 jobs from 466 events and 1.4 million visitors. The complex will expand with the new Coca-Cola Amphitheater set to open this summer to bring more live events.  The Birmingham Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Alabama students spent their spring break volunteering through the Beyond Bama program run by the Center for Service and Leadership. Twenty-three students traveled to Memphis or Orange Beach and worked with local groups—such as Serve 901 and coastal partners—to build leadership skills and serve their communities.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Senator Bobby Singleton supports a new gambling package that will require African American ownership in casinos to help offset the $290 million loss from DOGE cuts in public and mental health funds. Former star Charles Barkley also supports legalizing sports betting while lawmakers count votes needed for the bill—discussions continue behind the scenes.  1819 News
  • Governor Kay Ivey signed a law in March that makes it a felony to own devices that turn pistols into machine guns — punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Police said the law came after a fatal shooting outside a Birmingham lounge in September that killed four and injured 17 people.  WVTM 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday at State Farm Arena, the Auburn Tigers beat Michigan State 70 to 64 to clinch their second Final Four berth. Johni Broome scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and left the game briefly with an elbow injury before returning (a notable double-double performance).  1819 News
  • On Saturday, Monster Jam drew over 50,000 fans to Protective Stadium in downtown Birmingham — the monster truck event saw trucks flipping and soaring through the air. The busy weekend also featured the NCAA Women’s Basketball Sweet 16 at BJCC and a production of Les Misérables while the NCAA Women’s Basketball Elite Eight begins today.  Bham Now
