COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mary Catherine, a baby recovering from open-heart surgery, inspires the 2025 Red Shoe Run Rockin’ 5K on April 12 at Ronald McDonald House Charities in downtown Birmingham. Her family and team will compete at 8 AM+ the event aims to raise $35,000+ which will fund 233 nights of care for families in need.  Bham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spruce, an orphaned cougar cub from Oakland Zoo in California, will soon arrive at Birmingham Zoo to join a rescued female cub in the new cougar habitat—opened on March 19—and the public may vote until April 1 on a name for her.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After rains today, the natural spring at Avondale Park flooded the pond and made sidewalks near the Miss Fancy statue slick; Birmingham City Council will hire a contractor with high-speed water jets — officials have secured the area to keep pedestrians safe.  AL.com
  • City of Birmingham extended its gateway beautification partnership with Jefferson County through a three-year agreement approved by city council on March 25th (decision finalized last week) that focuses on maintaining ADOT rights-of-way with routine grass cutting, litter removal, and landscaping. The project does not cover street resurfacing or pothole repair (as specified by the plan) and builds on improvements established before the 2022 World Games.  The Birmingham Times
  • City Walk, a downtown public space with a skate park and local art, faces a $1.6 million funding gap because its $400,000 in revenue does not meet its $2 million annual operating cost—BJCC plans to seek additional donations and sponsorships by the holiday season.   • Legacy Arena in Birmingham is hosting the Sweet 16 session of the women’s NCAA basketball tournament today as top college teams battle for a Final Four spot in Tampa — venue upgrades and years of planning since 2018 brought women’s tournament games back to the city for the first time since 2001.  WBHM
  • On March 28th, the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team won 113 to 88 over BYU to advance to the Elite Eight while setting NCAA Tournament records by making 25 three point shots and scoring 75 points from deep. Mark Sears contributed 10 threes and 34 points and coach Nate Oats broke the program win record — the Tide will face the Duke Blue Devils at 7:49 p.m. CST tonight on TBS.  Yellowhammer News
