COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several local churches will host Easter sunrise services on Sunday, April 5, with services beginning at 6:30 a.m. in venues like Vestavia Hills Methodist at 2061 Kentucky Ave & Trinity United Methodist at Homewood Central Park, offering worship and family events during Holy Week.  Bham Now
  • A replacement for the 20-year Butterbean Festival, Pinson Butterbean Days is scheduled for Oct. 2 and 3 in downtown Pinson. The new two-day event will feature arts and crafts, food trucks, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities.  WVTM 13
  • Jefferson County Greenways is asking local gardeners for native ferns, sedges, and flowers to help supply 60,000 plants for East Side Park at Roebuck Springs, which will open in December.   • Monster Jam is taking over Protective Stadium today with champion drivers and 12,000-pound trucks performing high-flying stunts and bracket-style racing on the dirt track; a pre-event Pit Party offers fans a chance to meet drivers and see the trucks up close.  ABC 33/40
  • On Saturday, April 18, the 20th Annual Gumbo Gala will take place at Cahaba Brewing Company with top gumbo teams competing to raise funds for Episcopal Place (a non-profit offering affordable senior housing and services). Advanced tickets cost $20 online or $25 at the door.  Bham Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham’s only rail-served inland port (Birmingport) joined Export Alabama earlier this month to boost global trade and job opportunities. The port handles 2.2 million tons of goods and supports 1,500 jobs via river, rail and road.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall ordered businesses statewide to stop selling products containing Kratom that are illegally marketed as pain relief (e.g., Boujee Bliss) and warned that violators may face asset seizure and felony charges.  Yellowhammer News
  • Central Alabama Water said three of four treatment plants stopped fluoridation in 2023–2024 due to prior equipment failures, and it ended the practice at its last plant on March 20. Former board members dispute this account and argue that decisions affecting Birmingham's water quality lacked proper notice and transparency.  WBHM
  • Highway 280 lane closures near the Cahaba River bridge were announced by state officials to improve road safety. Drivers are advised to plan ahead as the closures remain in effect until further notice.  6 WBRC News
