- ➤ At a neighborhood block watch meeting held Monday evening at the Birmingham Police Department West Precinct, community members and officials discussed public safety as Capt. Raymond Cochran noted crime had dropped — with homicides down 11.7% and robberies down 32% — and urged residents to report any issues immediately. WVTM 13
- ➤ The 10th annual Homewood Library Foundation Block Party takes place on April 5 from 5 until 7:30 p.m. at the Homewood Library, offering live music, food samples, drinks, and fun activities for families. - ➤ The AMC Classic Lee Branch 15 movie theater closed its doors Sunday after showing films for more than 20 years on Doug Baker Boulevard + many locals shared their memories. According to The Shelby County Reporter, the 67,950-square-foot building will be converted into a gym. AL.com
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gasoline prices in Birmingham dropped by 3.0 cents per gallon over the past week to average $2.68 while the national price rose by 6.3 cents to $3.08. Local stations ranged from $2.49 to $3.09 per gallon — a 60-cent difference in price. ABC 33/40
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On February 4, the Alabama Public Charter School Commission sent a letter to Magic City Acceptance Academy in Homewood requiring it to submit a notarized statement on its efforts to comply with Act 2024-34—failure to respond may lead to charter revocation. Dr. Karen Musgrove, the school CEO, said the academy is revising its curriculum, policies, and materials while retaining legal counsel to address the concern. 1819 News

- ➤ Alabama passed SB199 to provide paid parental leave for state employees and public school educators, and Gov. Ivey is expected to sign the bill soon. Eligible female employees will receive up to eight weeks of fully paid leave for childbirth, miscarriage, or adoption while male employees will receive two weeks—effective July 1. Yellowhammer News
