CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Birmingham launches the StrongHer initiative during Women’s History Month to honor women 60 and older, dubbed the Golden Girls, who shape local neighborhoods through service and advocacy. More than 200 profiles of community leaders will be shared on city platforms to inspire residents.  Bham Now
  • Dear Evan Hansen is coming to Red Mountain Theatre’s Cromwell Theatre in downtown Birmingham from April 3 to 19, featuring UAB senior Darion Dewhirst as Evan. Evening shows (7:30 p.m.) and weekend matinees (2 p.m.) offer flexible viewing options for audiences 13 and up.  Bham Now
  • Wu-Tang Clan will perform with guest Bone Thugs-N-Harmony on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Coca-Cola Amphitheater in Birmingham, and tickets will go on sale Friday, March 27 at 10 a.m.  ABC 33/40
  • Vestavia Hills native Elizabeth Hanje won the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition on Sunday, March 22 at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, earning $20K as one of six winners selected from over 900 qualified singers.  Bham Now

  • Jefferson County Board of Education announced its 2026 Teachers of the Year last Thursday at a banquet in downtown Birmingham, naming elementary teacher Sherlyn McNamara and secondary teacher Nefertiti LeBeaux (they will represent the county in the State Teacher of the Year program).  6 WBRC News

  • The City of Birmingham posted job openings on Monday, March 23 on its jobs website, listing positions from police officer to firefighter. Interested applicants can email the recruitment team for more details.  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Birmingham residents with MS are supported by local National MS Society programs which link them to peer groups and vital resources plus host events like Walk MS at Homewood Central Park on March 28 at 9:30 a.m. and Evening of Wines on May 17 at the Country Club.  Bham Now

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Tasting Table named J and J Grocery and Deli the best hole in the wall burger joint in Alabama. The Bessemer shop serves a double bacon cheeseburger, other burgers, and breakfast (5:30 a.m.) Monday-Saturday near UAB Medical West.  Bham Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Miles College made history when its Golden Bears cheer team won both the Overall Grand Champion title and the College Coed Game Time Championship at the CCA Christian Cheer Nationals and Collegiate Championship in Fayetteville (N.C.) on March 7. The team, the first HBCU to win both, overcame funding and facility challenges.  The Birmingham Times
