  • First United Methodist Church of Birmingham today announced that Rev. Kevin Thomas will become the new senior pastor on July 1. Thomas served 10 years at Forest Lake United Methodist Church and holds degrees from the University of Alabama and Memphis Theological Seminary — his new role aims to strengthen the church's mission to provide an open place for all to worship.  AL.com
  • Birmingham’s Crescent Cultural Community Center in West End offers local youth a safe space to learn, grow, and access programs like civic training, music enrichment, and job skills. Executive director Antski Williams uses his own troubled past to mentor youth — the center served more than 10,000 community members from March 2024 to February — and now seeks funding for upgrades.  AL.com

  • Archibald & Woodrow’s BBQ, a nationally renowned restaurant from Tuscaloosa County, announced its move to Birmingham by taking over the former Rib-It-Up location at 830 1st Ave N downtown—its first restaurant in the city. CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police investigated a Friday night shooting on the 200 block of Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard—20-year-old Dorian Jackson was shot and later pronounced dead at UAB Hospital while a 12-year-old boy and a woman sustained injuries after traveling in a vehicle to meet someone.  6 WBRC News
  • Calera authorities have launched a zero-tolerance policy for sex offenders who break residency laws—recent checks found several offenders in violation and led to arrests and orders for some to move away from areas near childcare centers—ensuring safer local records and protection for residents.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill known as the Community Pharmacy Relief Act passed in Montgomery last Thursday + it sets a $10.54 fee on pharmacy benefit managers that local pharmacists say will help fix unfair fee practices. Local pharmacist Anthony Bolus said one of his pharmacies in Hoover closed because PBM charges hurt his business.  6 WBRC News
  • Alabama State Parks has launched its Ambassador Program that invites park lovers to share photos and videos of 21 state parks on social media. Applicants must send at least four images each month - and they will receive special merchandise - while space remains limited.  Yellowhammer News
