- ➤ The Birmingham Zoo opened its newest exhibit on March 19 to showcase a young orphaned cougar cub and two bobcats, Baxter and Boomer, that arrived earlier this month. Visitors can cast $1 votes to name the cub Sage, Sierra, or Juniper until April 1—each vote supporting her care. Yellowhammer News

- ➤ UAB junior Snekha Rajasekaran gained research experience during summer 2024 programs at Stanford School of Medicine and University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine where she studied links between heart disease and diabetes. - ➤ Since last year's delays, Amwaste has improved service with a new schedule and technology upgrades like iPads for route tracking—local officials report missed pickups dropped by over 80 percent while a new contract starting in April will cut costs and add penalties for missed collections. - ➤ Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin announced a $1,000 reward through Crime Stoppers for credible tips that lead to an arrest for possessing a Glock switch after Gov. Kay Ivey signed a law on March 19 that made the offense a Class C felony. AL.com
- ➤ The Alabama House passed a bill requiring post-election audits for county and statewide general elections to boost trust in election results. Under the bill, county probate judges will randomly audit one precinct and one race no earlier than 31 days after an election — they will report their findings to the Secretary of State — and the measure now moves to the Senate for review. - ➤ Birmingham pastor Frank Woodson has formed an exploratory committee as he considers running for mayor in the August city elections—he said he will decide on his candidacy after launching several community initiatives in the next 45 days. AL.com
