CULTURE NEWS

  • Leslie Smukler restored the bronze Miss Fancy statue at Avondale Park with solar panels, modernized lighting and a replumbed fountain to honor its historical legacy. The celebration will be held Saturday, Apr. 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the statue's alcove (by the library) with custom T-shirts and hoodies.  Bham Now
  • UAB’s Arts Week runs March 30-April 9 and features a PRISM Concert (at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center on March 30), faculty open studios, a student film showcase and poetry awards. The events invite students, alumni and the Birmingham community to experience diverse arts.  Bham Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex generated over $463.5 million in economic impact for the metro area in 2025—according to a report by Maynard Nexsen—and credits spending, employment and events at downtown venues like the Coca-Cola Amphitheatre.  6 WBRC News

  • UAB will host its spring 2026 Service Learning and Undergraduate Research Expo from April 20-24 on campus, where undergraduates will display research and compete in Video Research Awards + win cash prizes; the free event welcomes community feedback.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ivey has ordered flags statewide to be lowered on the day Major John A. Klinner is interred. The directive will take effect once his burial date is set and honors him along with other service members killed in Iraq.  Yellowhammer News

  • On Wednesday, the Jefferson County Commission hosted a Women’s History Month event in Birmingham to highlight breast cancer awareness through advocacy and donations; the event featured a $15,000 donation to Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies that supports mammogram outreach and educational programs for underserved communities.  The Birmingham Times
