- ➤ AL.com asked Birmingham residents for ideas to improve safety in 2025—as the city works to lower its high homicide rate from last year. Residents suggested stronger policing, new leadership, expanded public transit and better community programs while officials continue efforts with crime commissions and increased police presence. - ➤ Six-month-old Ember Southard died at Children's of Alabama on March 14th after being attacked by at least one dog at a relative’s home in Alabaster—her grandmother found her unresponsive and police are investigating the incident. AL.com
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights corrected its report to show that UAB is under investigation for alleged race-based scholarships and segregation instead of UA. The agency announced on Friday that it has launched Title VI probes at 51 colleges—federal officials said the review will continue to protect students from discrimination. 1819 News
- ➤ Birmingham City Schools honored top educators by naming Andrea Burrell Bobbs from Sun Valley Elementary as Elementary Teacher of the Year and Aubrey Bennett from G.W. Carver High as Secondary Teacher of the Year (the surprise ceremonies were attended by Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan). The district also named Beverly Brown from A.H. Parker High as Librarian of the Year and Quentin Jackson from Green Acres Middle as Counselor of the Year (his award was announced during National School Counseling Week). ABC 33/40
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama House passed four bills that cut the state sales tax on food and boost tax breaks for retirees 65 and older—saving more than $121 million in estimated annual state taxes. The changes will take effect on September 1 and January 1 and now head to the Senate for further review. ABC 33/40
- ➤ The Alabama Senate passed SB116 on Tuesday with a 24—2 vote and sent the bipartisan bill banning conversion devices to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk; if signed, the law will go into effect right away and make possession a conversion device a Class C felony. The bill comes after multiple deadly shootings statewide and aims to help police address the threat of devices that turn semi-automatic guns into machine guns. 6 WBRC News
