  • Last week, Momentum Leaders hosted a luncheon to honor four local women who have shaped the community during Women's History Month—Bobby Bradley, Judge Agnes Chappell, Dr. Connie Hill and Dr. Cameron Vowell were recognized for their leadership in business, law, youth programs and environmental science.  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • The Birmingham Police Department made 75 arrests from March 11 to March 15 as part of Chief Pickett’s 8-Point Comprehensive Crime Reduction Strategy — the operation included 47 felony arrests, 28 misdemeanor arrests, multiple traffic stops, citations and seizures of narcotics, firearms, vehicles and money that contributed to a 41.3% drop in the homicide rate for 2025.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • UAB is set to host pianist Fei-Fei Dong on Sunday, March 23 at 4 p.m. at the Alys Stephens Center as part of the UAB Piano Series — she will perform works by Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Boulanger and Liszt while tickets cost $15 with discounts available for students and UAB employees.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Birmingham rose by 6.2 cents per gallon to an average of $2.71 this past week but remained 44.7 cents lower than at the same time last year (550 stations were surveyed by GasBuddy). The survey also found a wide range of prices with the cheapest station at $2.39 and the most expensive at $3.10.  ABC 33/40

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Seven tornadoes struck central Alabama on Saturday — an EF3 in Plantersville caused two deaths and an EF2 in Winterboro caused one death — and survey teams assessed damage in 16 areas while scheduling further evaluations in several counties.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Randall Woodfin hosted an AMA on Birmingham Reddit where he answered questions on road repairs, social media blocking, and corporate donations—explaining his choice to run for a third term at the request of residents. He said he is pushing utility companies and the state to fix road patches and lighting to boost public safety, and the election is scheduled for August 26.  1819 News

  • The Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team will begin its NCAA Tournament run as a No. 2 seed in the East Region, and coach Nate Oats said—anything less than a Final Four run would disappoint him—that the team is well-prepared for a tough postseason challenge.  Yellowhammer News
