  • State legislators approved an $800,000 contract for Firehouse Ministries' Pathway to Purpose reentry initiative today, offering housing assistance, job training, mentorship and mental health support to formerly incarcerated individuals in Birmingham. The program aims to expand services to help community members successfully reenter society (a step to reduce recidivism).  ABC 33/40

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A U.S. military refueling aircraft crashed in western Iraq earlier this week, killing all six onboard including an Alabama father stationed in Birmingham who had just been promoted & moved his family into a new home.  WBHM

  • Legendary storyteller Ira Glass will share insights from decades in radio at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center on Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $39 + discounted rates are available for UAB staff and students.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • Retired deputy chief Felicia Rucker-Sumerlin made history as the first female deputy chief in Jefferson County after earning a Criminal Justice Administration degree in 2011 from Columbia Southern University. She rose from jail work to serve as patrol and school resource officer, paving the way for others in law enforcement.  Bham Now

  • Dr. Christina Pierpaoli Parker from UAB explains that sleepiness means you cannot keep your eyes open while tiredness is low energy from a long day, and only sleep cures sleepiness.   • The Magic City Links chapter is hosting free mammogram screenings on Saturday, March 21 at 10 a.m. to noon at Alabama Regional Medical Services Clinic (7001 Crestwood Blvd, Suite 822, Birmingham).   • Workers began demolition Monday, Mar. 16 as Brookwood Village’s former Belk store is being redeveloped into a $124 million, 135,000 sqft orthopedic clinic for Andrews Sports Medicine along U.S. 280. Fairway Investments said interior tear-down will commence before demolition continues in April.  AL.com
