ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Major Klinner, a Birmingham resident and father of three who served eight years, was among six service members killed when a KC-135 crashed in Iraq on March 12 during a refueling mission in friendly airspace.  AL.com

  • Parkside on Fifth, the upscale Avondale bar established in 2022 and known for its cocktails and sweet treats, will close on March 27 as owner Tim Burt shifts his focus to opening his new bar, Mockingbird on Main, in Greensboro (a town of about 2,100).  AL.com
  • Costco is opening six new stores in March & April in Texas, Utah, California, and Manitoba. A $105 million, 152,000 sqft warehouse is planned to open in the Birmingham area in Spring 2028 on Grants Mill Trail near Interstate 459.  AL.com
  • Coca-Cola UNITED is selling its 39-acre campus along East Lake Boulevard that holds 350,000 sqft of office and industrial space to move to its new corporate headquarters in Birmingham's Kingston area, which will be completed in late 2026 — Graham and Company will list the property.  WVTM 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents can enjoy the Milky Way viewing season at parks like Cheaha State Park as the galaxy lights up clear nights from late March to late September. Stargazers can use astronomy apps to plan — the best views are between midnight and 5 a.m.  Yellowhammer News

  • Central Alabama Water (CAW) has reorganized its operations by eliminating 211 funded positions (including 23% of employees) and closing its payment center and museum according to a Friday announcement; the changes aim to save $20.1 million per year and prevent a nearly 10% rate hike in its service region.  The Birmingham Times

  • Jefferson County Health Department celebrates National Nutrition Month as WIC Nutrition Services Coordinator Micah Madsen advises residents to fill half their plates with colorful fruits + vegetables, choose lean protein and drink more water for better health.  6 WBRC News

  • Odenville native Jessie Holmes began the Iditarod race Sunday with 33 mushers on a (1,000-mile course) from Willow to Nome, aiming to defend his title with a finish expected around March 17 after a 4,500-mile winter training.  WBHM
