COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Junior League of Birmingham’s Corps of Volunteers helps local nonprofits by giving women a chance to build leadership skills and manage community events — with new member admission opening this fall. The group has supported local fundraisers, health initiatives, and education programs.  Bham Now
  • Railroad Park launched its campaign to win USA Today’s 10Best Readers Choice poll and sits in eighth place as of March 12. Daily votes will count through April 6 to boost its ranking as America’s Best City Park.  Bham Now
  • Auburn defensive lineman Jourdin Crawford used $30,000 from his Name, Image and Likeness deal to open The Greedy House nonprofit at 422 Sixth Ave South on March 7. The hub offers meal and hygiene kits and hosts community programs for kids.  WBHM
  • A new MAX Transit bus (Women Who Move Birmingham) was unveiled on March 3 outside the convention complex to honor seven local women leaders, and it will travel throughout Jefferson County this month sharing their inspiring stories.  Bham Now

  • The Sakéroom, a new Japanese-inspired cocktail and sushi lounge in Five Points South (2007 Highland Ave), is launching with a soft invite-only event today and a grand opening on Friday, March 20 from 5PM to 2AM. Founder Paige Depperschmidt designed the chic space to offer an elevated Tokyo-style experience.  Bham Now
  • Homewood's Savage's Bakery will reopen Monday, Mar. 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. under new owner Kenneth Rhodes who intends to preserve the bakery's 87-year tradition and give the first 250 customers a complimentary Smiley Face Cookie.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alabama House passed a $10.9 billion education budget on Thursday that raises teacher pay by 2% and invests $150 million in career and technical education. It also allocates $250 million for school choice from the CHOOSE Act + supports pre-K, literacy, and numeracy programs.  Yellowhammer News
  • Samford University reached a record enrollment of 6,324 students and opened two new residence halls (adding 512 beds) in 2025. The Birmingham institution grew its endowment to $539.7 million and earned national honors for career preparation in its annual report.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham city leaders approved nearly $400,000 in federal funds on Tuesday to assess up to 14 brownfield sites – the two-phase evaluations will guide whether these properties in Ensley, Pratt, North Birmingham and East Birmingham can be cleaned for housing, job centers or commercial spaces.  ABC 33/40
  • Today, as the nation nears its 250th birthday, the 117th Air Refueling Wing at Birmingham–Shuttlesworth International Airport supports global missions while staying rooted in the local community. Commander Mike Adams said the unit’s 1,150 personnel—including many part-timers—carry a more than century-long legacy from World War I.  ABC 33/40

  • UAB researchers released the second HBCD data set featuring the largest infant MRI+EEG and behavioral data available for approved scientists, and they are continuing to recruit pregnant women for five-year follow-ups at UAB.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • According to a RentCafe study, from 2018 to 2023 Birmingham’s Gen Z renter households surged by 1,318% & lower living costs and growing job opportunities helped spark more young residents to rent rather than buy. The findings mark a shift in local housing choices.  AL.com

  • The American Conference basketball tournaments are underway at Legacy Arena as UAB’s men’s team begins quarterfinal play today at noon and faces the winner of a 6 p.m. game. A free fan fest at City Walk — with a Saturday pep rally — promises a $3 million boost for local business.  6 WBRC News
