COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Other Foundation Birmingham launched a community grant cycle — inviting residents and organizations to apply for monthly awards of $1,000 to $3,000 for local projects. Members will contribute $100 a month to a $10,000 pool and vote on ideas until April 10.  Bham Now
  • UAB's Spring Cleaning for a Cause 2026 clothing drive invites donations of gently used attire and accessories April 9-10 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center lower-level entrance. The donations will aid local outreach programs that provide career attire and recovery clothing throughout Birmingham.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • Hop City Beer & Wine was named the 3rd Best Beer Bar in America by USA Today 10Best on March 4 (its fifth year ranking in the top ten). The beer bar has three locations and offers over 1,200 varieties, reinforcing its national appeal.  Bham Now

  • Birmingham gas prices rose 32 cents to $3.21 per gallon on March 11 as spring travel boosted demand; last week's average was $2.89 (local report) and experts expect higher prices (per market trends).  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Kay Ivey, in her final year, detailed education improvements at the annual PARCA forum in Birmingham. She pointed to lower truancy and rising math and reading scores and signed new laws (FOCUS Act and Healthy Early Development and Screen Time Act) to reduce classroom distractions.  Yellowhammer News

  • City leaders approved a $200,000 deal with ALDOT to repair lighting along Bush Boulevard under I-20/59, addressing safety concerns in District 8; improvements will boost nighttime visibility for drivers & residents.  WVTM 13

  • UAB scientists have revealed how a molecule called NFAT guides uterine immune cells to aid placenta development — a finding that may link low NFAT activity with preeclampsia and early pregnancy failure.   • UAB Hospital in Birmingham ranked as the fifth largest US hospital with 1,400 beds, according to a Becker’s Healthcare study. It expanded its inpatient rehabilitation pavilion and emergency department amid rising patient demand last year, boosting care across the region.  Yellowhammer News
