COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Caravan of Hope will pull into Birmingham on Friday, Mar. 6, bringing an uplifting community event that residents can look forward to. Details about stops and activities are expected to be shared soon.  6 WBRC News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DC Blox plans to expand its Birmingham data center with a new 30,000 sqft facility that will require 7.5 megawatts and bypass the city’s data center moratorium. Work will start once the company secures a customer and the project may add a dozen jobs.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham’s Royal Cup Coffee & Tea announced an agreement to acquire Farmer Brothers Coffee to boost its foodservice and retail operations + the all-cash deal at $1.29 per share is set to close in Q2 pending shareholder approval.  Bham Now
  • 205 Wings opened in Avondale this week at 4030 1st Ave. North (replacing a former Rally’s location) and offers a diverse menu with wings, chicken tenders, and more; the first 205 customers receive a 10% discount.  Bham Now
  • Vuori will open its first Alabama store on March 13 at The Summit as it moves into the former Frutta Bowls space at 225 Summit Boulevard + the popular athleisure brand is expected to attract local shoppers with its performance apparel.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Bessemer Airport Authority announced it secured $4 million to renovate the airport's large-aircraft parking apron (900 Mitchell Field Rd) to support safer operations and future development.  Bham Now
  • Homeland Security purchased the old Birmingham-Southern campus on the west side and will turn it into a Coast Guard training center for 1,200 recruits & 400 staff, a move expected to add 1,000 jobs to the community.  AL.com
  • The Alabama House unanimously passed House Bill 487 on Feb. 26, directing $43 million from opioid settlement funds to treatment, recovery, mental health (and prevention and law enforcement) programs. The measure now moves to the Senate and would take effect June 1 if approved.  Yellowhammer News
  • Birmingham and the Jefferson County Commission planned a $1.9M project to widen and repave Edwards Lake Road to improve safety after residents raised concerns over dangerous cut-through traffic (the city will provide $550k and the county $1,375k for the 30-day work).  AL.com
