CULTURE NEWS

  • Legendary guitarist Travis Wammack died Friday at 81, renowned for hits recorded at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals and for his role with Little Richard. He earned honors from the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame (a career marked by explosive riffs and subtle textures).  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham artist Roscoe Robinson, known for singing with the Blind Boys of Alabama and writing a hit for Sam Cooke, died Thursday at 97. He built a seven-decade career bridging gospel and soul that made him a lasting fixture in the local music scene.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jefferson County Schools opened its new JCIB campus (the former Fultondale High on Carson Road North) for grades 6 to 12 with an aerospace academy. Families toured the campus today ahead of classes starting Monday.  ABC 33/40
  • House Bill 78 will limit screen time in classrooms by restricting digital use for children in daycare, pre-K and kindergarten classes, with children under two not using screens. The bill goes to Governor Ivey's desk on Tuesday — a task force will set the specific limits.  6 WBRC News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Southeastern Grasslands Institute at Austin Peay State University has launched a two-year seed collection project funded by an $800,000 federal grant to gather prairie seeds from the Black Belt, Coosa Valley east of Birmingham, and Moulton Valley near Huntsville to restore grasslands.   • Alabama Power is set to launch its 27th-year Renew Our Rivers cleanup (an annual event) on March 7 with the Valley Creek Cleanup in areas including Adger, Bessemer, Birmingham and Providence. Volunteers will remove trash to keep our waterways safe.  Yellowhammer News

  • UAB Hospital was named Alabama’s top hospital on Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 list, ranking No. 59 among over 400 U.S. hospitals — and it earned special recognition for patient experience from rigorous quality metrics.  The Birmingham Times
  • Birmingham Public Library is hosting a free mindful eating workshop on Tuesday, March 3 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Central Library (2100 Park Place) that will help women learn strategies to curb emotional eating and promote wellness.  The Birmingham Times
  • A UAB doctor warns that swinging temperatures from the 20s to the 70s this week may bring lingering winter coughs + spring allergies, so residents are advised to resume allergy medicine, wear sunscreen, layer up, and stay hydrated to stay healthy.  6 WBRC News
