COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Drivers face delays as a section of 26th Street South from Hatcher Place to Highland Avenue remains closed for drainage improvements — detour signs guide traffic to 11th Ave South. The closure began Monday, Feb. 23 and will last for 10 working days.  Bham Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nebius is proposing a multibillion-dollar AI factory on the former Regions Lakeshore Operations Center along Lakeshore Parkway. Construction will begin later this year and take 30 months, and the center will create 200 construction jobs, 100 operating jobs and generate nearly $87 million in annual school taxes.  AL.com
  • Velvet & Vine BHM, a new restaurant offering elevated Southern dining, will open in March on the second floor of Thomas Jefferson Tower (1623 Second Ave. North) in downtown Birmingham; executive chef Hassan Gooden has been perfecting recipes for both to-go lunches and seated dinners.  The Birmingham Times
  • Huey Magoo’s will open 4 new restaurants in Birmingham as part of its planned expansion over the next two years. The franchise, which already operates 85 restaurants across 12 states, is working with the Jha Rajput Patel group & aims to reach 100 locations by the end of 2026.  AL.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Birmingham dropped 6.5 cents this week to $2.53 per gallon based on GasBuddy’s survey of 550 stations, though prices remain 6.6 cents higher than a month ago and 18.5 cents lower than last year.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jefferson County's new IB school will open Monday, Mar. 2 for students from Pleasant Grove (Grades 6-8) and Irondale (Grades 9-12), with families invited to an open house on March 1 at the former Fultondale High School site on Carson Road.  6 WBRC News
  • Governor Ivey proclaimed Public Schools Week Monday to mark historic education gains for students, teachers and schools statewide. The effort highlighted improvements in reading, math and graduation rates, along with boosted college and career readiness from longstanding reforms.  ABC 33/40
  • Downtown's Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) offers a special program that mixes hard work in academics and creative arts for grades 7–12. The public school uses advanced math and science courses, hands-on labs, and research projects that help students earn top awards and prepare for future studies.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham officials advanced a proposal to convert a lot at 1312 First Avenue North into a day shelter for unhoused residents + linking them to essential services + with no overnight use. The site will operate 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and may open in early summer if approved by full council.  6 WBRC News
  • Gray Analytics Inc. in Huntsville won a missile defense contract with work running until Feb. 18, 2031, while Brasfield & Gorrie LLC in Birmingham secured a contract for lab and office construction in Auburn finishing by May 19, 2028.
