  • Southern Research in Birmingham is set to spend $2 million in new federal funding to upgrade equipment such as its cell analysis system, high‑resolution imager, clinical chemistry analyzer and synthesis instruments. The planned upgrades will support faster biomedical research.  AL.com

  • UAB's Blue Moon Cocoon exhibit invites visitors to explore nature-inspired creativity through luna moth imagery and hands-on demos by artist Virginia L. Montgomery. It runs at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts (AEIVA) with free admission Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.  6 WBRC News
  • Local bookstores now offer Birmingham by the Book, a guide that explores the city’s rich history with over 360 photos and 60 detailed maps (compiled over 50 years of research) to help residents rediscover their community.  Bham Now

  • UAB Science Nights is set to feature interactive exhibits and live experiments for families at UAB later this week, offering hands-on learning opportunities for local children and adults.  6 WBRC News
  • Over 200 students from Birmingham and Jefferson County schools showcased their talents Friday at Red Mountain Theatre in the annual YouthSpeak event. The event—organized by City Councilor Crystal N. Smitherman and Red Mountain Theatre—featured performances in spoken word, music, dance, and drama.  The Birmingham Times

  • The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division announced its 2026 schedule for free boating basics and license courses available statewide. Interested participants aged 12 and older should contact the designated instructor to enroll and pay a $5 application fee + $36.25 issuance fee for the vessel operator license.  Yellowhammer News
  • Birmingham Parks and Recreation is recruiting lifeguards for its summer pool season. Training classes are scheduled March 23-27 at the Birmingham CrossPlex, and applicants aged 16 and older who can swim are urged to call 205-254-2391 (competitive pay and community service experience).  The Birmingham Times

  • Legislators propose bills to remove out-of-pocket costs for prostate & breast cancer screenings for insured Alabamians; one bill awaits the governor’s signature while others would require insurers to cover follow-up tests for high-risk groups.  6 WBRC News
