COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A regional coalition of local leaders has secured $4 million in federal funding to retrofit the Hollywood Blvd overpass between Homewood and Mountain Brook with protected sidewalks and improved traffic control. Bids for the sidewalk phase will go out in early March, and overpass improvements will be offered for bid by Spring 2027. Bham Now
- ➤ Jo Ann Bland, a longtime civil rights advocate, died today in Birmingham (she championed equality and justice for decades), leaving a lasting impact on the community. 6 WBRC News
- ➤ Disability advocate Graham Sisson led efforts at Vulcan Park to install a new glass elevator after the original was out for nearly all of 2025; his work with local groups preserved the historic look (and ensured universal access) for all visitors. Bham Now

- ➤ Mumford & Sons will perform at the Coca-Cola Amphitheater on Tuesday, Sept. 29 as part of the Prizefighter tour—tickets for the show featuring the Marcus King Band go on sale Friday, Feb. 27 at 10:00 a.m. ABC 33/40

- ➤ On Thursday at Red Mountain Theatre, over 200 students from six Birmingham City Schools and one Jefferson County school performed art, spoken word, music (and dance) during the fifth annual YouthSpeak showcase that celebrated Black History Month and highlighted their role in shaping its future. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Staff at Jefferson County water reclamation facilities rescued a red-shouldered hawk called Parrot and a rare tiger salamander nicknamed Norman during routine checks. Parrot received care at a local wildlife center while Norman now lives in South Alabama. Bham Now

- ➤ The City of Birmingham announced that 26th Street South between Hatcher Place and Highland Avenue South will be closed for up to 10 working days starting Monday, Feb. 23 for drainage infrastructure installation as part of Highland Park improvements (drivers are advised to use 11th and 27th Streets as detours). - ➤ UAB performed its first National Kidney Registry transplants in February — linking Alabama patients to a national donor network and expanding living-donor options. Advanced matching technology improved outcomes and marked a key step in enhancing transplant services. University of Alabama at Birmingham
- ➤ The Alabama Neurodevelopment Center in Birmingham is easing long mental health wait times by offering faster diagnoses and training clinicians. The center will start accepting new patients in April + it also launches a program for Ph.D. students to gain clinical experience in developmental disability care. WVTM 13
- ➤ Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama offer Project Lifesaver to help track loved ones with dementia — a free wristband that sends a radio signal which trained deputies use to locate them if they wander. ABC 33/40
