  • On Monday, Feb. 16, the Petersons of On a Bun served 200 free meals at their downtown restaurant (2328 Second Ave. North) from 5-8 p.m. and donated 100 extra meals to Margins: Women Helping Black Women to support local residents.  The Birmingham Times
  • In Fultondale, recovery is ongoing as residents repair homes and empty lots left by tornado damage in 2011 and 2021+ City officials say rebuilding efforts depend on insurance and federal support to address long-term impacts.  ABC 33/40

  • Following Saks Fifth Avenue’s bankruptcy announcement, community members submitted over 1,100 ideas for a replacement at The Summit, with many urging a Dillard’s option since Birmingham lacks one + suggestions also included Nordstrom, IKEA, and Zara alongside creative local twists.  Bham Now
  • Roll Cajun Boudin opens its first brick & mortar at 2208 6th Ave S in Southside today, while R3 Contrast begins contrast services at 3250 Independence Dr in Homewood; Own the Red Carpet will open Tuesday, Mar. 3 and Saks Fifth Avenue at The Summit closes end of April.  Bham Now

  • Today marks Lunar New Year, the Year of the Horse, celebrated with family-friendly events. In Birmingham, the Birmingham Museum of Art hosts the East Asian Heritage Festival Saturday, Feb. 21 (1–5 p.m.) with lion dances and food tastings, while local restaurants offer festive dishes.  Bham Now

  • Gas prices in Birmingham increased by 10 cents over the past week, reaching $2.60 per gallon today according to GasBuddy’s survey of 550 stations. The rise follows national trends as local rates vary widely (from $2.35 to $2.89 per gallon).  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham is set to redevelop the 500-acre former Ensley Works site using a $2 million state SEEDS Act grant for planning, environmental studies, and port upgrades at Birmingport & boost logistics and manufacturing growth in the Western Corridor.  Yellowhammer News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawson State received a used bucket truck from Alabama Power to boost its 10-week lineworker training program. The truck lets students practice climbing over 50 feet to inspect power poles and learn essential skills for utility work.  The Birmingham Times
  • UAB’s Bartow Arena will undergo a $15.4 million renovation in May 2026 after the spring commencement ceremonies to add an expanded lobby + club-level seating + updated concourse features. As construction starts in May, summer commencement is cancelled, and graduates will celebrate in the fall.  Bham Now
  • Birmingham readers will have the chance to meet bestselling Christian author Lysa TerKeurst at Samford University on Tuesday, March 3. The event at the Leslie S. Wright Fine Arts Center starts with a 5:30 p.m. VIP reception and includes a Q&A session after her talk.  Bham Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Red Cross is calling for urgent donations after its blood supply fell by 35% due to a severe flu season and recent freezing weather — drives at a Walmart in Calera and one in Springville offer a chance to help.  WVTM 13
  • The CDC shows flu cases are rising as 11 states reached high flu activity, with Alabama reporting a 17% jump in emergency visits for respiratory illness compared to last week (the agency advises getting flu shots, washing hands often, and avoiding close contact).  AL.com
  • Candace Knight, Ph.D., an associate professor at UAB School of Nursing, explains how pregnancy loss, including miscarriage and stillbirth, affects families and stresses the need for respectful care and mental health support (counseling and local support groups can help those in grief).  University of Alabama at Birmingham
