  • Birmingham businessman John Mejia credits his faith after immigrating to New York at age 10 with his mother and siblings, overcoming hardships on welfare to earn a scholarship to Syracuse, serve as a Naval Officer, and build a career as an airline pilot and real estate professional.  Yellowhammer News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Roll Cajun Boudin will open its restaurant on Mardi Gras Tuesday, Feb. 17 in the former Iron City Grill space. The new eatery will serve Cajun dishes from its food truck roots and offer a small grocery section — giving locals an authentic taste of Cajun flavor.  Bham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Birmingham offers eight theater productions showcasing musicals, comedies and dramas this month. Shows run from Feb. 5 to Feb. 22 at local venues (including Trussville, Homewood and downtown theaters) so check local listings for details.  Bham Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham has received a $2 million state grant to boost economic growth by developing a master plan and environmental studies for about 500 acres at the former U.S. Steel Ensley Works site + upgrading the Birmingport facility, officials said.  Bham Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the wood stork from the endangered list, noting that recovery efforts have grown its wetland population from Alabama to North Carolina. The agency will monitor the species for 10 years (with final delisting set for March 12).  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey urged residents to prepare for spring severe weather by taking advantage of the Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday from Feb. 20 through Feb. 22, which lets shoppers buy emergency supplies (flashlights, batteries, and first-aid kits) tax-free.  ABC 33/40
  • Residents in Hoover are relieved as work begins on a multi-million-dollar drainage project to fix persistent flooding on Highway 31. The city will replace old metal pipes with concrete ones to improve business access — the project is set to finish in July.  WVTM 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Heidi Neas of Huntsville was 16 weeks pregnant when an abnormal genetic test led her OB/GYN to refer her to UAB Medicine. The team discovered an 11-centimeter kidney tumor and safely removed it at 24 weeks, and she delivered a healthy baby boy.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Alabama officials have proposed using robotic ultrasounds in rural maternity care to fill OB-GYN shortages through a $203 million federal grant. The plan will link small clinics to regional hubs (with training for local providers), but the robots are not yet in use.  WBHM

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Feb. 13, Sarah Killian and Sylvie Sparks visited the Pelham Civic Center and Ice Arena to try figure skating during the 2026 Winter Games excitement. Coach Christian Newberry (1988–89 British Men's Champion) said anyone can learn the sport; local rinks are drawing fans from Nashville and Atlanta.  WVTM 13
