  • The Exceptional Foundation’s 22nd Annual Chili Cook-Off will be held Saturday, March 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Urban Center at Liberty Park in Vestavia Hills.   • Andy’s Creekside Nursery in Vestavia Hills welcomes Deep Earth Rock Shop, now offering rocks+fossils, crystals and unique Valentine’s hand-carved hearts inside the main greenhouse. The shop is open Monday to Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Bham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Birmingham residents can visit the free Civil Rights Story Zone at City Walk today to learn about pivotal moments from the Civil Rights Era. The family-friendly exhibit is in a downtown space near historic sites, and a new urban development called the Civil Rights Crossroads is expected by the end of 2029.  Bham Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham has received $2 million from the SEEDS Act to prepare the Western Corridor as a logistics and manufacturing hub. The project will begin with a master plan and environmental studies for 500 acres at the former U.S. Steel Ensley Works (and Birmingport upgrades) to attract quality jobs.  6 WBRC News

  • Altamont School French teacher Allison Harris was named the Alabama World Language Association's Teacher of Excellence and Teacher of the Year at a conference held Feb. 6-7 in Mobile. The honor spotlights her commitment to world language education since joining the faculty in 2013.  ABC 33/40
  • UAB has canceled its August commencement as Bartow Arena undergoes $15.4 million renovations after spring commencement. The UA System Board of Trustees approved the upgrades—including a new lobby, club lounge, and improved finishes—so graduates must register for spring by April 1 or fall by May 15.  AL.com
  • A New York Times column highlighted Alabama's post-pandemic academic gains and ranked the state No. 1 in math recovery, crediting strong policies in early literacy & attendance. Governor Kay Ivey said these deliberate choices support continued improvement in student performance.  Yellowhammer News

  • Alabama senators Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt backed a bipartisan CLEAR LABELS Act that will require country-of-origin labels on prescription drugs to give patients clear details on ingredients + accountability. The measure is now introduced in Congress.  Yellowhammer News
  • After Sarah Marsh’s death on July 4 at Camp Mystic in Texas, her parents urge Alabama lawmakers to pass the Sarah Marsh Heaven’s 27 Camp Safety Act. The bill—requiring camps to adopt emergency plans, use weather radios, and locate cabins outside floodplains—has advanced to the full House.  WBHM
  • City officials said Birmingham received a $2 million SEEDS Act grant to redevelop 500 acres at the former U.S. Steel Ensley Works site and upgrade Birmingport. Planning and studies will begin immediately to ready the area for logistics and manufacturing.  ABC 33/40
