  • United Way of Central Alabama’s inCommunity initiative aims to bring food pantries, free clothing and school-based support to Fairfield, Jasper and soon Birmingham — a move that responds to local needs by using community data and resident input.  Bham Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Saks Fifth Avenue in Birmingham (129 Summit Blvd.) will close by the end of April amid lease and performance concerns following the company’s bankruptcy filing. The decision affects the chain’s only Alabama location.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Birmingham pastor Rev. Bill Greason (101) recalled his long career breaking racial barriers while serving as minister at Bethel Baptist (Berney Points) and witnessing historic moments; his children’s book Three Uniforms will be released soon.  The Birmingham Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham City Council approved an agreement allowing American Cast Iron Pipe Company to begin a $790 million expansion that will add 80 new full-time jobs. The deal includes performance incentives & a 10-year tax abatement to support local manufacturing and economic growth.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The UAB Department of Ophthalmology opened The EyeSight Foundation of Alabama Surgical Skills Laboratory at UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye to provide residents and fellows with advanced simulation and wet lab training and enhanced hands-on experience in a modernized space—featuring an EyeSi Surgical Simulator and multiple teaching stations.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senate Bill 80 would require every hospital emergency department in Alabama to have a physician present 24/7, ensuring immediate treatment when seconds matter.   • City officials have privately discussed a $10 million gap for the Family Fun Center — a project backed by Mayor Woodfin near the Crossplex — while the $22 million project will begin construction in April with a grand opening planned for 2027.  AL.com
  • On Tuesday, Birmingham launched the Black Male Initiative to help boys ages 8 to 14 stay in school, boost literacy and job skills and receive mentorship from schools, churches, and barbershops — led by local civic leader Carnelle Howell.  The Birmingham Times
  • Hoover City Council approved an ordinance on Monday night to fund the Central Alabama Home Building Academy that offers free training to residents 17 and older in trades like plumbing and HVAC. Builders will pay a ($20 fee) on permits to support the program.  ABC 33/40
