  • Birmingham-based WVTM 13 anchors Brittany Decker and Guy Rawlings will serve as King and Queen of Mardi Gras on the Mountain, a fundraiser for Easterseals. The event takes place at The Club on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 6 to 10 p.m.—featuring a nine-piece band, buffet dinner, and silent auction.  WVTM 13
  • City of Birmingham and Jones Valley Teaching Farm are investing $100,000 in local urban farmers by awarding $10,000 to each of 10 local organizations; the funds will support garden upgrades and food education + boost community wellness.  6 WBRC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Jefferson County approved a $10.9M incentive package for StoneX’s expansion at 2 Perimeter Park South — a move that will add 88 high-paying jobs and boost local revenue over 15 years; county officials said the support, which includes tax abatements and a jobs incentive, signals renewed local growth.  The Birmingham Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shelby County Schools was named a Semiquincentennial School District by the Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission + American Village, recognizing its plan to enrich academics and the arts with American heritage and community service projects. The district will focus on responsible citizenship as it marks America’s upcoming 250th birthday.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pelham City Council confirmed full federal funding for the Railroad Crossing Elimination Project along Shelby County Road 52, which will remove two train crossings by building a bridge and realigning the road. The project will begin environmental studies now with construction planned for 2029 and completion in 2031.  Bham Now
  • City leaders in Bessemer are updating Project Marvel, a multi-billion-dollar data center project, by acquiring extra land for buffer zones (to address environmental concerns from residents); a public hearing is set for March 3 to review the revised plans.  ABC 33/40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alabama’s Rural Health Transformation Advisory Group met Wednesday following the state's $203.4 million award for a program to improve rural health care led by Governor Ivey. The group, which includes legislative leaders, will advise on plans to boost access in rural communities.  Yellowhammer News
  • Researchers at UAB reported that restoring gut health may guard against diabetic retinopathy. Their study found that improving tryptophan metabolism boosts a protective compound in the retina + future clinical tests will see if these nutraceutical approaches can slow vision loss among diabetics.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
