  • On Feb. 1, Jimmie Hale Mission opened its warming station at 3420 2nd Ave North to provide warm shelter, food and shuttle service for people needing help, while Pathways offered shelter for women and children at 409 Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd. City support added funding and resources.  ABC 33/40

  • Evans Meats & Seafood moved into a new 116,000 sqft warehouse on Messer Airport Highway in Birmingham earlier this year. The family-owned distributor boosts capacity and eases commutes for long-term staff while planning future growth across the Southeast.  Yellowhammer News

  • Mobile native Bryant Thomas (a favorite online performer) revealed himself on the American Idol stage in Nashville, earning a golden ticket to Hollywood and proposing to his girlfriend moments later, which stirred support from judge Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie while Alabama viewers celebrated his milestone.  Yellowhammer News
  • Birmingham Zoo held an early Groundhog Day ceremony (Feb. 1) at its plaza because it was closed on Monday. During the event, Birmingham Jill saw her shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter as visitors took pictures.  ABC 33/40
  • Throughout Black History Month, WVTM 13 is honoring trailblazing Alabamians in partnership with Green & Phillips and Birmingham City Schools. The station presents archival footage of the Civil Rights Movement and celebrates daily the legacy of those who raised the bar locally.  WVTM 13

  • Richard Arrington, Birmingham’s first Black mayor and long-time public servant, reflected on segregation and white flight while warning that economic development must balance past neighborhood decline (his early life shaped his commitment to change).   • Officials announced new support for Garden City water system to boost reliability amid community concerns. They made the announcement three hours ago (with further updates expected as work begins soon).  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorectal cancer is now the top cause of cancer deaths among people under 50, according to a new American Cancer Society study. Doctors attribute the trend to late detection (three in four are advanced), and guidelines now call for screening at age 45 while UAB researchers study genetic links.  6 WBRC News
